wait wait. i forgot to mention about the other portion of the soc psych tutorial.
don't read this if you vehemently feel that men are angels.
and well, after reading some of the guys' opinions on the culture of female genital mutilation and basically the culture of treating females like crap in arab countries and in india, i really had to say something.
please do not portray females as self-pitying kids who have no reason to whine.
two views.
first of all: yes, we should view culture as culture. we should blame the culture and not the men.
but then again, you kinda have to ask: who advocated such cultures in the first place? did some voodoo woman wake up one morning and decide to cut up her genitals?
well, no. you see, it was the men in those african countries who had that idea. they couldn't get over their insecurities than some other man might insert himself into their property. after all, females aren't exactly treated as humans there.
so, as a female, i shouldn't be appalled?
i mean, how would the guys feel if they were seeing fellow men having their balls disposed?
secondly, i did ask the very direct question, "why are men such bastards?" for a good reason. it's just that, you don't hear a lot of women mutilating or splashing concentrated sulphuric acid on men, so, yeah, the blame largely falls on men, besides the women who have been brainwashed by the culture advocated by men in
their culture.
and on a personal point of view, most men i know have been, sadly, disappointments to themselves, their family and their own integrity. one commited suicide because he couldn't take the pressure of his own debts, one went bankrupt and decided that upgrading his family's handphones and buying new furnitiure were more important than say, clearing old debts and giving money to his poor mother. another couldn't take it that his wife was earning more than him and went out and had an affair, not to mention live off his wife's salary. so, yeah, a lot of the men that i have known havent exactly been promising.
so, guys, what does "bastard" mean to you?
perhaps, bastard is a too strong a word.
basically, what i'm trying to say is that men tend to succumb to their egos a lot. and in kenya and arab countries and such, where their egos are given free reign to take lives, that makes those men bastards.
whichever the case, i am NOT saying that the boys in my class are bastards. i believe that they are the best of the breed thus far. it's just that, be it male or female, there is that portion of rotten eggs that spoils the reputation of the gender. the same goes for females; i am NOT proud of the granny who wanted her granddaughter to get circumcised.
as a female, i don't think it was wrong of me to be agitated with what i saw was being done to fellow women. if God had twisted His finger a little i might have ended up circumsised in africa myself. and you might say, "well, then stop bitching and do something about it."
in that case, i only have one thing to say to the guys- why don't you do something about the men in that culture (i am viewing it in a cultural light now) who find it their duty to stone their 'property' to death instead of complaining about how the girls are generalising men as bastards? i mean, you guys say that all the girls know how to do are complain, but aren't you doing exactly the same?
i'm now throwing the call back to you. if you don't want to be generalised and discriminated against, then DO something about it.
